Mortal sin is a grave offense that seriously damages our relationship with God. For a sin to be mortal, it must involve grave matter, be done with full knowledge, and be freely chosen. Because it breaks the bond with God, forgiveness comes through the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession), after true contrition and a firm resolve to amend. This is why the statement that mortal sin is a serious sin that breaks our relationship with God and needs Reconciliation to be forgiven is the best description. Simply saying sorry once doesn’t repair the harm, mortal sin does affect our relationship, and salvation isn’t earned by committing such sins.
